Devoted To SomethingPsalm 1:2

I Can Only Hold A Little

This message is for to be devoted to teaching when you can genuinely only take in a small amount at a time and every environment around you assumes more

Four verses, and she is full.

Not bored. Not distracted. Full, in the way a person is full after a meal, and if she keeps going it does not go in and she has proved this to herself more times than she can count.

She has known it since she was nineteen and she has never once said it out loud in a room, because of what the rooms are like.

The rooms are good rooms and nobody in them is unkind. But somebody reads a whole chapter and says something about it. Somebody else does a book in a fortnight. There is a study that covers Romans in eleven weeks and she went to three of them and understood every word and could not hold any of it past the car park.

Four verses. Sometimes two.

And what she has done with that for thirty years is treat it as an embarrassing medical fact about herself, like a shoe size she would rather not have. She works around it. She does not mention it. When somebody asks what she has been reading she gives an answer that is technically true and structurally misleading.

Underneath, permanently, there is a sentence: I am not really a serious person about this.

She has been carrying that since she was nineteen. Thirty four years of a sentence, about a woman who reads four verses every single morning and has not missed a week since her twenties.

I Can Only Hold A Little

In his law doth he meditate day and night

Sit down on the window seat a minute, because the very first psalm describes the person it calls blessed, and the measurement it uses is not the one you have been using, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has brought you to it this morning.

But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.Psalm 1:2

Day and night.

That is a duration. It is a measurement of how long something stays with a person, not of how much of it went in.

There is no quantity anywhere in that verse. It does not say how many chapters. It does not say how fast. It says the law of the Lord is what he delights in and that it is with him through the whole turning of a day, and a person can meditate day and night on two verses far more easily than on eleven chapters.

In fact eleven chapters cannot be meditated on day and night by anybody. There is too much of it. It has to be got through, and getting through is a different activity with a different name.

Hear this on your own window seat. You are not an unserious person, and the written word is what settles it. Scripture measures duration rather than volume in the first psalm it ever gives anybody, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has had you at four verses every morning since your twenties without a missed week.

Now let me be careful about the rooms, because they are good rooms and I will not be clever at their expense.

The people who read chapters are not doing anything wrong, and the woman who did Romans in eleven weeks got something real from it that you did not get, and that is a true statement and I am not going to soften it.

What went wrong is not their reading. It is that a volume became visible and a duration did not.

A chapter can be reported. Somebody can say I read Romans this year and everybody in the room understands what happened. Nobody can say I have been turning one sentence over for nine days, because there is no natural moment to say it and it sounds like nothing when it is said, and so the only measurement anybody in that room ever hears is the one you cannot produce.

Hear this too, and let it land in the light. You have not been failing at this for thirty four years, and Scripture is what says so. What is written measures how long the word stays rather than how much of it went in, and the Spirit of God has never once asked anybody to hold more than they were built to hold.

And now the part you have never counted, because you have only ever counted what you cannot do.

Four verses, five or six mornings a week, since your twenties. That is somewhere past forty thousand verses, taken slowly, one small handful at a time, by a woman who was full and stopped.

Nobody in those rooms has done that. Not one of them. And you have never once put it in that column, because you have spent thirty four years measuring yourself with an instrument that was built for somebody else. The written word never used that instrument, and the Spirit of God has been in every one of those forty thousand verses with you.

The breakthrough

So this week you take your true amount and you carry it through the day out loud.

Your true amount. Four verses, or two, or whatever it actually is on that morning, and then you stop, on purpose, while the room in your head is still telling you to keep going.

And then the second half, which is where the psalm is: you carry it.

Say it out loud at eleven o'clock. Say it in the car. Say it while you are waiting for something, and again in the evening, and once more when you go up, and let it be with you through the whole turning of that day, because that is what is written and the Holy Spirit is the one who keeps a sentence alive in a woman between eleven and bedtime.

That is day and night, and it is the actual instruction, and it has never required a chapter from anybody.

The written word measures duration rather than quantity in the first psalm there is, and the Holy Spirit has had you at four verses every morning since your twenties without a missed week, so nothing about your capacity ever made you an unserious woman.

And the sentence from when you were nineteen. Thirty four years is long enough. It was never a description of you, it was a description of a mismatch between a woman and a measuring stick, and you can put it down on a window seat this week.

Declare this over yourself

Say these on the window seat with the book closed. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit has had you at four verses every morning for thirty years according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of how much goes in at once. Whether the sentence stays with you all day or slips by lunchtime, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a measure of a woman who has not missed a week since her twenties.

  1. Number I have been ashamed of since I was nineteen, you are not a limit on anything and you are not a fault. Scripture says in his law doth he meditate day and night, and that is a duration and there is no quantity anywhere in the line.
  2. Sentence that says I am not really a serious person about this, get off this window seat, in the name of Jesus. The written word never once asked anybody to hold more than they were built to hold, and the Spirit of God has had me at four verses every morning for thirty years without a missed week.
  3. Lord, You measured how long it stays and not how much went in, and Your Spirit has been with me over forty thousand verses taken four at a time, exactly as it is written. I am taking my true amount this week and stopping on purpose, and I am saying it out loud at eleven and in the car and going up.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
