The Row On The Spreadsheet

This message is for to stop reading a small congregation as a failing line on your own spreadsheet when the numbers are the only thing you know how to trust

He built the tracker himself, which is the part he would rather not dwell on.

Four tabs. Attendance by week, attendance by month, a twelve month rolling average that updates itself, and a chart he is quietly pleased with because the conditional formatting works properly.

He is not a cold man. That is not what this is. He is a man who was taught, over a working life, that a thing you do not measure is a thing you are guessing about, and he has never once found that to be wrong.

The rolling average is thirty one point four.

Four years ago it was fifty two.

Here is the thing that started in about March, and it is precise, which is how he knows it is real.

He arrives at ten past nine to open the hall. It is empty. And somewhere in the eleven minutes between unlocking and the first car, standing in an empty hall with the chairs stacked, something arrives in his chest that has a specific shape, and the shape is: this is going down and I am the man in charge of it.

He does not say that to anybody. He would not know how to say it without it sounding like fishing.

By half past ten there are thirty or so people and he is genuinely glad of every one of them and he means it. He is not performing on a Sunday.

But he opens the file on a Monday evening, most weeks, and updates it, and the chart does what the chart does.

The Row On The Spreadsheet

Who hath despised the day of small things

Sit down with the file open, because there is a question in Zechariah that God asks about a building site, and it is asked in the middle of a job that was measurably worse than yours.

The temple is being rebuilt. It is small. Everybody old enough to remember the first one has said so, out loud, at some length, and the men doing the work know exactly how it compares.

And then this.

For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel.Zechariah 4:10

Who hath despised the day of small things.

It is a question, not a rebuke, and it is asked by God about a project He Himself is running. The smallness is not denied anywhere. Nobody in that chapter pretends the numbers are good.

And look at the object in the second half. A plummet. A plumb line, in a builder's hand. The instrument of a man measuring whether a wall is true.

Hear this in your empty hall at ten past nine. You are not the man in charge of a decline, and the written word is what settles it, not encouragement. Scripture puts a plumb line in the builder's hand on the small day and calls that a thing to rejoice over, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has had you unlocking a door for four years.

Now let me be careful about the tracker, because I am not going to tell a man like you to stop measuring and I would be wrong to.

Measurement is not the problem. The chart is accurate. Thirty one point four is a fact and pretending it is not would be its own kind of dishonesty, and you would see through it before you finished reading the sentence.

Here is what has actually happened, and it is one small step and it is the whole of it.

A number became a verdict.

Attendance is a count of people in a room on a morning. That is all it can measure and all it was built to measure. Somewhere between the second year and the fourth, that column stopped being a count and started being a report card on a man, and no spreadsheet on earth was designed to carry that and yours has been carrying it since March.

Hear this too, and let it come off in the eleven minutes. You are not being assessed by that figure, and Scripture is what says so. What is written asks who despises the day of small things and puts the plumb line in the builder's hand rather than a headcount, and the Spirit of God has never once handed a man a congregation and then graded him on its size.

And one thing said plainly, because this site will not have it otherwise: fifty two was not better than thirty one in the sight of God, and a church of four hundred is not further along than yours. That is not a comfort, it is the actual arithmetic of the kingdom, and if it were not true the verse in Zechariah would not be a question, it would be an apology.

The breakthrough

So on Monday you open the file, and you do the update.

Do not stop measuring. Nothing here asks you to, and a man who abandons his instruments because they hurt him has not solved anything, he has only stopped looking.

But when the chart has drawn itself, you are going to say one sentence out loud at that desk.

This is a count, and it is not a judgement.

Say it out loud, because you have been hearing the other thing in silence for months and silence has been letting it grow. The written word asks who has despised the day of small things and does not answer the question, because the answer is nobody in heaven, and the Holy Spirit has never handed you a verdict dressed as a figure.

And on Sunday, at ten past nine, in the eleven minutes with the chairs stacked, you have a job. Not a feeling to fight. A job: set out the chairs, and while you do it, say out loud that the day of small things is not despised.

Then open the door and be glad of every one of the thirty, which you already are, and which is the truest number in this article.

Declare this over yourself

Say these standing in the empty hall at ten past nine. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has kept you at that door for four years according to the written word, so the standing you speak from was never built out of a rolling average. Whether the figure rises next year or goes on falling, the outcome is His to decide, and it is never a report on the man who unlocks.

  1. Rolling average, you are not a verdict and you were never built to carry one. Scripture asks who hath despised the day of small things and puts the plummet in the builder's hand, and it is God asking, about a build that everybody present could see was small.
  2. Sentence that arrives in eleven minutes with the chairs stacked, get out of this hall, in the name of Jesus. The written word never made a headcount the measure of a man, and the Spirit of God has never handed anybody a congregation and then graded him on its size.
  3. Lord, You are the God who asks who despises the day of small things and does not answer it, and Your Spirit has kept me unlocking this door, exactly as it is written. I am saying out loud at the desk that this is a count and not a judgement, and then I am setting the chairs out.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
